Tour de Fat: Denver
Written by Jordan Twiggs

CanningDenver, Denver, Denver!

By the grace of whoever is in charge of good weather, they sent it! We sat under radiant skies dotted with rolling clouds and soaked up your wonderful knowledge about chickens, cottage industries, rainwater harvesting legal issues, and recipes for canning! What we expected to be a shady, unnoticed spot turned into a Wolverine Farm Urban Homestead dream!

In Denver proper, the legal requirements to keep chickens in your backyard include an intensive process involving meetings with the city and at least $150 in permitting and zoning fees. To those we spoke with who have chickens, it sounded as if you felt this was silly and kept some “rebel chickens” in your yards, and we support you! Go team!

You know what else is silly? The fact that rainwater harvesting is still quite illegal for some Colorado residents! It seems as if we all thought it was an easy thing to accomplish legally, but upon further research, it seems as if we were a bit hopeful in our wishes. Turns out, there’s a list of requirements that determine whether or not you can pull it off—you can’t be on municipal water supply, you must have a well, and it can only be collected off of the roof. Well, we say nay to that. Keep on keepin’ on with barrels you’ve got set up and push toward sustainability, Denverites.

It was a pleasure taking over City Park with you folks! Until next year, Denver, keep it classy.
