Helloooo Sunny San Diego!
Well, you certainly lived up to that name! Paul and I sat amongst the rays of the sun in the lovely (and extremely huge) Balboa Park, amazed by the weather we had for the event. Perfect conditions led to a decent attendance, and a more than decent array of talk at the Wolverine Farm Publishing Urban Homestead.
What amazed us most was how literally San Diego took the sense of being “urban.” The city never seems to stop! We wondered where all the grown food comes from, but some of you assured us that you had your own arsenal of fruits and veggies to bring to the table, all thanks to your small backyard plots. We applaud your efforts to produce your own foodstuffs, because that’s what we’re all about. The more local, the better! And how much more local can it get than your home?!
As far as rainwater conservation goes, y’all weren’t as hip as we might have liked to see, but no worries, you made it up for it other areas of sustainability. To keep you updated, as of now, there are no laws in San Diego that prohibits any resident from collecting the rainwater off of their roof, so go for it! It’s as simple as 123; 1 rainwater barrel, 2 sets of hands to help install it in your backyard, and 3 months of the winter season to fill that sucker up! Use that rainwater to keep those gardens green!
What a pleasure to spend time with you San Diego-ites. San Diegans? San Diegers? Whatever you may be called, we applaud your efforts and encourage your further pursuits of happiness, a.k.a. sustainability.
From a few of us at the WFP Urban Homestead, Stay sunny, San Diego. See you next year!
