Our literacy outreach programs are funded through Matter Bookstore proceeds and small grants. They are designed to improve the overall health of our community by empowering children and young adults with practical hands-on skills and creative writing exercises. In 2009 we held 7 workshops at Colona Community Farm and 15 children participated. The farm/garden environment gave the writers a good focus while still being creative. We have also brought our literacy outreach programs into schools.
This year our programs have expanded and will take place in a few different locations with different types of kids. We are hosting a program at Matter Bookstore called Lofty Writing Workshops. Currently, these are geared toward teens but we are planning to have some for adults in the future. Right now, there are 3 themed workshops in the series. The first is “Superheroes” on May 8th from 1-2pm the second in the series is “Free Verse” on May 29th from 1-2pm and the third is “Blogging 101”. More information on the Lofty Writing Workshop page.
Another literacy outreach series will take place at The Remington House, a residential foster care home, in Fort Collins. We will work in conjunction with the Growing Project, they will facilitate putting in the garden with the kids and we will work on writing skills at least once a week from May until September.
